What is the carnivore diet?
The carnivore diet is a nutritional strategy that completely excludes plant toxins (oxalates, lectins, phytic acid and so on) and, in line with humanity’s biological and evolutionary blueprint, consists only of the most nutrient-dense animal foods.
- Blocking plant toxins: it fundamentally blocks substances found in spinach, beans, nuts and so on that can trigger autoimmunity and damage the gut barrier.
- Restoring gut permeability (leaky gut): removing hard-to-digest plant fiber and toxins lowers inflammation in the gut’s epithelial cells and helps the gut barrier regenerate.
- Easing chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions: it can dramatically ease autoimmune responses such as skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis), joint pain and chronic fatigue.
- Metabolic flexibility: stopping sugar lowers insulin levels and shifts the body toward using fat as its energy source.
- Maximum nutrient density: you efficiently get highly bioavailable animal heme iron, zinc, B12, and well-absorbed protein and fat.
An easy start for beginners, with menus
Clear out plant foods and build your diet around animal foods
First, remove carbohydrates, sugar, seed oils (soybean oil, canola oil and so on) and vegetables from the fridge. If a strict 100% carnivore diet feels like too much for a beginner, build your meals around beef, pork, eggs and grass-fed butter. When cooking, use butter, tallow or lard instead of vegetable oil, and season only with salt.
Balance fat and protein, and drink more water and salt
Meals built on lean meat leave you short on energy, so choose fattier cuts, aiming for a fat-to-protein calorie ratio of about 2:1 to 1:1. Early on, you lose water much faster, so consistently drinking at least 3 to 5 g a day of good-quality sea salt or rock salt dissolved in water helps prevent dehydration and low energy.
Recommended daily menu for beginners
- Breakfast: three or four eggs fried in butter with bacon, or a cup of warm bone broth
- Lunch: a sirloin or ribeye steak (seasoned with salt), or grilled pork belly
- Dinner: grilled ground beef patties (with butter), or thin-sliced brisket with boiled beef flank
Side effects that may appear before the brain fully runs on ketones
These are typical symptoms as the brain and body adapt during the transition (keto flu) from glucose-based to ketone-based metabolism.
- Brain fog and headaches or a heavy head: once the brain’s main fuel, glucose, is cut off, there’s a lag before ketones efficiently cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to be used as fuel. During this time, a temporary energy shortfall in brain cells can leave your head foggy or aching.
- Lethargy, dizziness and a racing heart: as insulin levels drop sharply, the kidneys flush out large amounts of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium along with water. The electrolyte imbalance can make you dizzy when you stand up, drained of strength all over, or aware of your heart beating fast.
- Digestive trouble (diarrhea or nausea): gut bacteria that broke down carbohydrates and fiber dwindle, and bile secretion for digesting fat hasn’t adapted yet, so you may get loose stools, diarrhea, or nausea from poor fat digestion.
Health benefits once the brain and body run on ketones
When the brain starts using ketones (beta-hydroxybutyrate) instead of glucose as its main fuel, the metabolic system fully normalizes.
- A clear mind and better brain function (brain fog gone): ketones generate far fewer reactive oxygen species (ROS) in brain cells than glucose while actively producing ATP (energy). Your mind becomes very clear, and focus, memory and emotional regulation are maximized.
- Steady, sustained energy without blood sugar swings: post-meal drowsiness and the hunger that follows blood sugar spikes disappear completely. Because body fat and dietary fat serve as a steady energy source, your energy stays even all day.
- Less neuroinflammation and normalized appetite: ketones themselves act as powerful anti-inflammatory signals, reducing neuroinflammation in the brain. They also promote appetite-suppressing hormones and improve leptin resistance, so false hunger and urges to binge disappear.
